Kaspersky Lab Kicks off its cybersecurity research competition in S'pore

Global cybersecurity company Kaspersky Lab today announces the start of its student competition in Singapore, the ‘Cybersecurity Research Competition’.

The competition is set to provide a platform for the next generation of Singaporean talent to be able to share their respective knowledge and experiences, to explore new innovative ideas and drive cybersecurity technology development.

According to Dmitry Postelnik, Head of Educational Programs at Kaspersky Lab, the aim of this competition is to encourage and reward research contributions to cybersecurity science from student researches at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

“This competition is a unique platform that brings together young researchers, leading IT security experts and university professors from all over Singapore in a collaborative, fun and creative environment. Kaspersky Lab hopes this competition can spark the curiosity of as many people as possible and show the many different ways to step-in into the cybersecurity industry. We want to demonstrate that cybersecurity is fascinating. The world needs more highly skilled people in cybersecurity and Singapore has the talent to fill this need,” Dmitry Postelnik added.

Students can submit projects on the following topics:

1. Emerging threats for emerging platforms

  • embedded systems
  • mobile security (Android, IOS, Windows Phone, Blackberry)
  • mobile payment systems (e.g. NFC)
  • Windows 8, Mac OS & other operating _ systems

2. Securing cloud, virtual & ‘big-data’ infrastructure

  • mail services
  • storage services
  • social networks, etc.

3. Future protection technologies

  • proactive detection technologies
  • filtering technologies
  • data privacy
  • web application security, etc

4. Securing corporate infrastructure

  • combating advanced persistent threats (APTS)/targeted attacks
  • vulnerabilities, exploits
  • rootkits/bootkits
  • botnets
  • network security, etc.

5. Security education

  • tools and resources to raise and promote IT security awareness (including advertising, marketing tools)

This competition is open to students who are registered as students of Singaporean higher education institutions enrolled in Bachelor's, Master's or PhD’s programs. The program committee will evaluate and select the best submissions. The members of the committee will comprise a panel of Kaspersky Lab experts.

Among evaluation criteria are innovative value in the research paper as well as practical value and application of new ideas or methods in addressing suggested topics. The research papers will also be evaluated based on social importance and relevance of the research as well as scientific and methodological level in addressing a genuine social-economic issue. The students need to show how theoretical and practical conclusions were developed within the framework of the set task.

Students can submit their respective research paper now until April 20, 2017 via academy@kaspersky.com. Entries should include, in 500 words or less, an abstract of the paper giving a complete summary of the research. This is a synopsis of the whole document, which should allow the reader to gain an understanding of the objectives and outcome of the actual paper as well as describe the scientific contribution of the paper and explain why this paper merits the award.

Nominated papers must be available in English and pdf format. Papers may come from any field of cybersecurity research. Submissions may be published or unpublished. Submittal of significant unpublished results from current research in progress is encouraged. A signed letter from the Department Head or a professor verifying the originality of the student's work will be required for the finalists of the competition.

The winners of this competition will get free tickets to attend the RSA Conference 2017 in Singapore, the leading information security event in the region and other valuable prizes,

Winners will be announced on April 28, 2017.
